You just purchased an original piece of art.

Great! What do you do now to ensure its safety?

There are critical things to do and avoid so that you can begin and continue enjoying your art for a long time. We promised five but are providing two additional tips which are important as well.

Here are the 7 most critical mistakes from the list, as these can cause severe and often irreversible damage:

1) Touching Without Gloves: Oils and dirt from bare hands can cause staining and deterioration of surfaces like textiles, metal, and delicate art. Use clean cotton or nitrile gloves when unpacking and handling your treasures.

2) Improper Transportation Practices: Failing to use professional crating or secure packaging during moves (especially the initial one home) increases the risk of severe damage. Transport art and heirlooms with appropriate protection, especially when using your car. Artwork should be packed and placed in your car so that if you need to make a sudden turn or stop, your artwork will only shift slightly or not move at all.

3) Exposure to Direct Sunlight: UV light fades colors and weakens materials over time. Always use UV-protective glass and avoid placing pieces near windows.

4) Improper Environmental Control: FLUCTUATIONS in temperature and humidity cause materials to expand and contract, leading to warping, mold, and long-term degradation. Maintain a stable environment.

5) Using Acidic Materials: Non-archival materials like regular cardboard and wood can cause chemical damage. Always use acid-free, archival-grade supplies for storage and framing and remember to use gloves for handling..

6) Skipping Professional Appraisals: Without an appraisal, it’s difficult to insure or assess the value of items, leaving them vulnerable to loss or mismanagement.

7) Failing to Monitor for Mold and Mildew: Mold can permanently destroy paper, textiles, and wood. Regularly inspect storage areas and maintain proper humidity levels to prevent fungal growth.
